Admission Application Procedures

Follow the steps below to apply to Cannon School. Click on each step for detailed instructions and helpful links.

  • Step 1: Apply Online

    Please note: International Students are required to work with a placement agency before submitting an application. Please visit our International Student Program webpage for details.
    Complete and submit the online application, along with the $95 nonrefundable application fee.

    The online application includes these sections:

    • Applicant Profile
    • Parent Observation
    • Student Questionnaire (for Grades 5-12)
    You will also have the opportunity to upload your child's photo.

  • Step 2: Provide Writing Samples (incoming students grades 5-12 only)

    Print the writing sample worksheet, complete in student's handwriting, and return to:

  • Step 3: Request Teacher Recommendations

    Confidential online Teacher Recommendations are to be completed by the appropriate teacher(s) and submitted directly to Cannon School.

    Parents, click on the appropriate link(s) below to initiate the process.
  • Step 4: Request Records/Transcripts (grades 1-12)

    Records Release Requests should be signed by the parents and given to the previous school, permitting the school to forward at least two years of report cards, discipline, standardized testing, and any other relevant information pertaining to the student to Cannon School.
  • Step 5: Schedule a Student Visit

    Student Visits are required for all candidates. Visits must be scheduled through the Admission Office.

    Please complete the Visitor Medical Information Form, and bring it with you on your visit day.

    Cannon Lower, Middle and Upper School students adhere to a dress code. It is not a requirement that our visitors dress according to the dress code. However, the Cannon School dress codes can be viewed in the links above for your reference.

    The Admission Office invites student visitors to eat lunch in our dining hall as our guest. Lunch menus can be found here.
  • Step 6: Schedule Entrance Evaluation

    Entrance Evaluations are required for all candidates.

    Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten
    Applicants participate in developmental readiness assessments at Cannon School. Appointments begin at the end of October. Please call the Admission Office at 704-721-7199 to schedule.

    Grades 1-3
    Applicants take the Children’s Progress Academic Assessment (CPAA), and reading and writing grade level assessments. The CPAA is an online test which will be administered at Cannon School on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at 9:00 - 11:30 a.m. Please call the Admission Office at 704-721-7199 to register.

    Grades 4-12
    Applicants take the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE). The fee for the exam is paid directly to the testing company, ERB, at the time of registration.

    Grade 4 applicants take the Primary School level, ISEE. This is an online test administered at Cannon during a scheduled assessment time. To register for the Primary School level, ISEE, please call the Admission Office at 704-721-7199.

    Grade 5-12 applicants take the ISEE. Parents or guardians may register their child for a group testing date listed on the ISEE website. Cannon School is listed as a testing site (Test Site #340878). Please visit for more information and to register. We recommend registering as early as possible in order to secure your ideal date and location, as test dates fill up quickly. Registration closes 2 weeks prior to a test date.

Criteria for Enrollment

Enrollment decisions at Cannon School are based on an assessment of an applicant's ability to succeed in a challenging, yet supportive college preparatory environment. Academic records, teacher recommendations, entrance testing results, writing samples, and a student visit form the basis of this assessment.

An applicant's file is presented to the Admission Committee only when the entire application process is complete. Cannon School welcomes qualified students without regard to gender, national origin, race, religion, or sexual orientation.
