Dear Members of the Cannon Family,
I am pleased to announce that the Board of Trustees has appointed Mr. Christopher Jones
as Cannon School’s seventh Head of School. The board’s unanimous vote took place on October 1 and was based on the recommendation of the Search Committee. Christopher’s appointment will be effective July 1, 2019, and we look forward to welcoming him, his wife, Allison, and their two children, Ella (age 9) and Ryan (age 6), to the Cannon family.
Those of us who had the pleasure of meeting Christopher during his visit as a finalist admired his genuine excitement for building relationships, his deep commitment to caring for children and young adults, and his welcoming sense of humor. As the Cannon School community looks forward to celebrating our 50th anniversary in 2019-2020, we also look forward to welcoming Christopher—a dynamic leader who values authenticity and kindness as much as growth and innovation.
Christopher was thrilled to learn of his appointment and shared, “Allison and I are humbled by my opportunity to serve Cannon School as your Head of School. Our family cannot wait to be Cannon Cougars and join you in the Charlotte area just as we embark together on Cannon’s 50th year. I am ever grateful to the Search Committee, Matt Gossage, the Board of Trustees, and the entire Cannon family for the kind and open welcome we have felt the past several weeks. Matt’s impressive mark on Cannon will rightly be long lasting. I am honored to begin my journey of growth at Cannon with the benefit of his counsel in the coming months.”
Christopher currently serves the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools (Lab) as the Associate Director of Schools. Lab is an independent, nonsectarian school enrolling more than 2,160 students in Pre-Kindergarten - Grade 12. From its founding in 1896, Lab has been the home of progressive education, promoting the educational tenets of founders John and Alice Dewey.
Raised in Texas, Christopher was drawn to the University of Chicago to attend the College. After earning a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and serving with a cadre of fellow Army ROTC cadets, he joined the Lab team in various technology, program, and administrative roles. Subsequently, he earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business with a focus in corporate strategy. Since 2011, Christopher has served with a committed team of colleagues and professionals as Lab’s Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer, and in 2016, was appointed Associate Director of Schools. He has also served as Interim Executive Director of Alumni Relations and Development in 2018 and cherishes teaching his eighth-grade students a course on topics of decision making.
Christopher’s appointment is the culmination of a nine-month, national search that engaged Cannon parents and students, as well as the administration, faculty, and staff. I would like to thank Hans Peterson for his purposeful leadership of the Search Committee and all the committee members who spent countless hours asking essential questions and listening to insights from our community to make this all-important recommendation for our school.
On behalf of the Search Committee, I am thankful to all of you who shared your interest, enthusiasm, and honesty as we journeyed through this process together. Your involvement was critical in identifying a leader who understands our school’s culture and values. We are grateful for your trust and support.
I believe I speak for our entire school community when I say we are profoundly grateful to Matt Gossage for inspiring us for thirteen years as our Head of School with his soaring vision, his relentless pursuit of progress, and his courage in leading by example.
In the coming months, our community will have time to celebrate Matt’s legacy as well as to plan for welcoming Christopher and his family to Cannon. We look forward to keeping you apprised of plans for this transition as they continue to evolve.
We are enthusiastic about partnering with you on what is sure to be a momentous 50th year for Cannon School—one in which we honor our steadfast history and look ahead to our vibrant future.
