GIRLS BASKETBALL: Defending state-champion Cougars, opening tourney with win, have bright future – and present

No matter what happens over the final week of the season, Cannon School senior girls basketball player Maya McCorkle is proud of her individual record and the accomplishments of the teams she’s played on over the years.

That includes N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 4A championships in 2021 and 2024, a conference title every year, and an all-state nod for herself last season.

“Our (team) motto is ‘Leave a Legacy,’” said McCorkle, a shooting guard. “… I have left a legacy with those accomplishments and accolades, but there’s still more to do. I don’t want to leave and walk out of this building (Cannon School) with my last game not being a state championship win.”

As the state tournament comes to a close next week, with semifinal games being played on Tuesday and a state championship game slated for Saturday, Feb. 22, McCorkle and her Cougars teammates are in pretty good condition to enhance their legacy.
