BOYS HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: After slow start, veteran coach has tradition-rich Cannon ascending once again

By JOE HABINA, Independent Tribune

In terms of the recent historical success of their boys basketball programs, Central Cabarrus and the Cannon School have been the most decorated in their respective classifications in Cabarrus County over the last few years. While plenty of contrasts can be made between their public- and private-school pedigrees, both the Vikings and Cougars have won back-to-back state titles within the last five years.

Aside from their championship ways, Central Cabarrus and Cannon School have one other thing in common: Beginning this season, the legendary Jim Baker is now the only person to have coached both programs.

But when the veteran mentor decided to leave Central Cabarrus for Cannon School last May, no one could have expected he would experience such an immediate flip of fortunes.

Coming off two consecutive undefeated seasons with the Vikings, Baker’s inaugural Cougars team lost its first six games this season. It was one day away from being oh-for-November.

But once the Cannon roster – comprised of mostly brand-new players – started to embrace Baker’s revered style of play, the Cougars’ reversed their course again, this time for the good.

Since Nov. 30, Cannon has won 11 of 14 games. And with only two weeks left in the regular season, the Cougars are in position to earn a berth in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 4A tournament.

Cannon is ranked third in the Independent Tribune's Cream of Cabarrus Basketball poll.
