Common Ground: A Thoughtful Conversation on the Messages Young People Encounter Online

Cannon families are invited to join us for our next Common Ground gathering on Wednesday, Sept. 30, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. in the Cindric Performing Arts Center. This month’s conversation will explore the messages young people encounter online—and how those messages can shape the way they see themselves, others, and the world around them.

Young people encounter a wide range of messages online about who they should be, how they should look, and how they should relate to others. Social media can reinforce familiar stereotypes, challenge them, introduce new expectations, and create opportunities for connection and belonging. Young people may accept, question, resist, or reinterpret what they encounter.

Because families may understand these messages and their influence differently, this topic offers a meaningful opportunity to listen across perspectives and practice civil discourse.

Common Ground was created as a space for parents to engage in dialogue around topics that may elicit differing, and at times opposing, viewpoints. In a Cannon community shaped by diverse backgrounds and lived experiences, these gatherings allow us to practice communicating across differences with respect, curiosity, and kindness.

During the evening, faculty facilitators will guide participants through a structured small-group dialogue. Unlike debate, dialogue invites participants to listen to understand, speak from their own experiences and perspectives, ask thoughtful questions, and explore how others make meaning. Through questions, scenarios, and examples of online messages, participants will consider how their experiences and values shape their interpretations—without expecting everyone to reach the same conclusion.

Common Ground also gives parents an opportunity to strengthen skills they can carry into conversations at home. Practicing how to listen with curiosity, question ideas while upholding the dignity of others, and remain in conversation through disagreement helps adults model civil discourse for their children.

We hope you’ll join us as we continue building a culture where understanding and belonging grow through thoughtful and respectful conversation.
