Cannon's Journey Through China

Some lessons simply can't be taught in a classroom. This summer, a group of Cannon School Upper School students and alumni discovered that firsthand during an unforgettable 16-day journey across China. Accompanied by faculty chaperones Tram Tran and Lirong Wang, the group traveled through Hong Kong, Beijing, Chengdu, Jiuzhaigou, Hangzhou, Wuzhen, and Shanghai, experiencing a country where ancient traditions and cutting-edge innovation exist side by side.

Each destination offered something entirely different. Students stood in the heart of China's imperial history, explored ancient temples and palaces, wandered through picturesque water towns, and took in the breathtaking beauty of Jiuzhaigou's crystal clear lakes and mountain landscapes. They navigated bustling city streets, sampled regional cuisine, experienced everyday life from a local perspective, and gained a deeper appreciation for the customs and traditions that make each region unique.

The journey also provided a glimpse into China's rapidly growing technology and esports industries through Cannon’s partnership with the Network of Academic and Scholastic Esports Federation (NASEF). During a special visit with TT Esports, one of China's premier professional esports organizations, students learned about the many facets of the industry, from professional competition and team operations to content creation, business management, and career development.

The TT Esports staff welcomed the group enthusiastically, sharing their expertise while encouraging thoughtful conversations about the future of esports as a global profession. They expressed excitement about exploring future collaborations with Cannon School that could include expanded educational experiences, professional mentorship, and even international internship opportunities to give students hands-on exposure to the esports industry.

As memorable as the destinations were, the most meaningful part of the experience wasn't found on any itinerary, but in the students themselves.

Over the course of more than two weeks together, they embraced unfamiliar experiences with confidence and curiosity. They adapted to new languages, customs, transportation systems, and schedules with remarkable resilience. They encouraged one another through long travel days, celebrated new discoveries together, and represented Cannon School with kindness, respect, and genuine enthusiasm everywhere they went.

Travel has a unique way of expanding perspectives, and this journey reminded everyone involved that growth often happens outside of familiar surroundings. Every conversation, shared meal, historical site, and cultural experience added another layer to the students' understanding of the world and their place within it.

By the final days of the trip, one running joke perfectly captured the experience: everyone's suitcases had somehow become heavier, everyone's sleep schedule was thoroughly confused, but the memories were absolutely priceless.
