Portrait of a Cannon Graduate

A Cannon education prepares our graduates for an unpredictable world, filled with possibilities and opportunities to serve others while exploring their interests, and creating pathways where none existed.  Our alumni serve in the fields of social justice, medicine, education, journalism - far and wide, and close to home. Some serve in the armed forces, others in politics. We are so proud of each of them. We will highlight their stories here on a rotating basis, so please check back often.

It’s time to choose a 1 month elective course for your 4th year of surgery residency, where are you going? For Will Sherrill ‘07, he decided it was the perfect time to go somewhere different and stretch his comfort zone, setting his sights on Abu Dhabi.
After 8 months of waiting on approvals, Will headed out to the United Arab Emirates. While medicine is a universal language, each person has unique approaches they gleam from their culture. This rotation gave Will the opportunity to see medicine more globally, interacting with individuals from all over the world and learning from others. He states, “it was a very positive experience to see the same procedure done in different ways, build a skill set, and get more comfortable with different cultures.”
Will’s conducted his fifth and final year of residency in Charlotte, NC in General Surgery with plans to enter into Minimally Invasive and Robotics Surgery with a fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis. He is constantly pushing himself to meet new goals and attributes his work ethic and strive for success back to the values Cannon helped to instill.

“I was where I was supposed to be during that time of my life.”
Life has a tendency to play out the way it is supposed to and Lindsey has seen it unfold in just that way. Growing up, she had always wanted to go to Wake Forest, but it seemed different cards were at play when she was initially waitlisted. Thanks to her college counselor, Mr. Alex Segura, the confidant who silently cheered her on from the chair next to hers, she left the voicemail removing her name from the waitlist in order to pursue a different route that just felt right. It wasn’t an easy or rash decision but flash forward 12 years, Lindsey is thriving in a way she couldn’t have predicted.
After Cannon, Lindsey made the decision to attend Rhodes College, where was led down the path of a social justice focus sparking an interest to pursue a masters degree in social work at The University of Pittsburgh. Today, Lindsey is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker running her own therapy practice in Asheville, in addition to an online coaching practice across the country. Through these outlets as The Breakup Therapist, she helps individuals and couples heal from relationship trauma and destructive patterns.
Jenna Metwalli

What are best friends for? In the case of Jena Metwalli, it's convincing you to try something new that ultimately leads you to your new passion in life.
While in 8th grade at Cannon, Carrie Shauder ‘16 convinced Jena to join her on the cross country team. Originally passionate about soccer, this was something new and fun for Jena to try and continued to run cross country in the fall and soccer in the spring. By the fall of her sophomore year, there was something about the camaraderie of a cross country race that she decided to pursue running wholeheartedly and thanked soccer for the memories. Fast forward to today and Jena’s accomplishments include helping her team at the University of Michigan win three Big 10 Championships, earning a 40 second personal record on her mile time on the track, and dropping a minute off her cross country time.
When she doesn’t have her running shoes laced up, Jena earned her degree in Public Policy from the University of Michigan. She has a passion for bringing about change and hopes to leave her mark in sustainable urban planning.
