School Leadership

Whit Brown, Director of Business and Finance

Whit has been at Cannon since 2007. He previously served as a senior consultant for McGladrey & Pullen and holds a Certified Public Accountant licensure.

Whit earned a Bachelor of Arts from Southern Methodist University and a Master of Business Administration from Boston University. He and his wife, Heather, are parents of Morgan '23, Peyton '25, and Carson '28.

Bill Diskin, Director of Admission and Financial Aid

Bill joined Cannon School in 2007. Before coming to Cannon, Bill was the Director of Admission and Marketing at York Country Day School in York, Pennsylvania. He also held various positions at Winchester Thurston School over the course of twelve years.

A Pittsburgh native and devoted Penguins fan, Bill earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He and his wife Nicole are parents of Chloe '10, Jakob '17, Ben '19, and Elliott '21. In his spare time, Bill enjoys reading, writing, and fishing.


Bill Donovan, Director of Institutional Technology

Bill joined Cannon School in 2015. Prior to coming to Cannon, he served as the Director of Technology at Sandy Springs Friends School in Sandy Spring, Maryland, and as the Technology Director at Canton Country Day School in Canton, Ohio. He and his wife Bonnie have two adult daughters, Mollie and Katie.

Bill earned a B.S. in Business Administration from University of Phoenix. In his spare time, he enjoys playing drums and guitar.
Todd Hartung, Director of Advancement

Todd joined Cannon School in 2010. He previously served as Associate Vice President of Alumni Programs and Annual Giving at Queens University of Charlotte and Director of Development at Forsyth Country Day School.

A native of Connecticut, Todd received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned a Master of Business Administration from the Babcock Graduate School of Management at Wake Forest University. He and his wife, Regina, are parents to Isabella '24, Emma '26, and Alexander '31.

Fabio Hurtado, JrK-12 Director of Studies

Fabio joined the Cannon School family in 2008. Before joining Cannon, he served as an English, Spanish, and Theology teacher at Catholic independent schools in South Florida. He also coached state and national championship chess teams. At Cannon, Fabio has held the role of teacher, department chair, and Upper School Academic Dean prior to becoming the JrK-12 Director of Studies in 2016.

A native of Cuba, Fabio has lived and worked in Cincinnati, Baltimore, and Miami. He is married and has seven children, including two children currently at Cannon - Rebecca ’22, and Grace ’24 - and Cannon alumnus, Joseph '20, as well as three grandkids. His wife, Teresita, serves as Cannon's Upper School Learning Specialist. Fabio enjoys riding his motorcycle on Cabarrus county back roads and visiting our peer schools.
Katie LaRue, Director of Athletics

Katie joined Cannon School in 2020. Before joining Cannon, she was the Director of Athletics at the Madeira School in McLean, Virginia. Prior to that, she spent five years as the associate athletics director, girls basketball coach and volleyball coach at Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania, following four years as the assistant athletics director and girls basketball coach at Asheville School.

Katie earned her B.A. in Business Management from Charleston Southern University, and her M.B.A. from Winthrop University.
Carla Moyer, Head of Middle School

Carla joined Cannon School in 2000 as a math and science teacher. After serving as the Dean of Seventh and Eighth Grades from 2008 – 2014, she was named the Head of Middle School.

Carla earned her B.S. in mathematics from Muhlenberg College, and her M.Ed in Middle Grades Education from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Carla and her husband, Pat, are parents to Mackenzie ’12 and Tully. She is an avid reader, enjoys visiting her children in Arizona and Maine, and loves her running group.
Regina Nixon, Head of Lower School

Regina joined Cannon School in 2020. Before coming to Cannon, she served as the Assistant Head of Middle School at Nashoba Brooks School in Concord, Massachusetts. She has also worked at Nashoba Brooks as the director of admission for three years, director of educational technology and innovation for two years, and instructional technologist for one year.

Regina earned her B.S. in Elementary Education and her M.A. in Education from East Carolina University, and her Ed.D. from University of Pennsylvania.
Debra Otey, Head of Upper School

Deb joined Cannon School in 2011. Previously, she served as a teacher, lower and middle school division head, curriculum director, and assistant superintendent at public and private schools in West Virginia, Illinois, and North Carolina.

Deb earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Alderson-Broaddus University, a Master of Arts in Education from West Virginia University, and her Administrative Certification in Educational Leadership through Northern Illinois University. She and her husband, Rex, are parents to Caeden '22 and Carter '20. Come football and basketball season, you can find Deb cheering for her beloved West Virginia University Mountaineers.

Beth Wilner, Director of College Counseling

Beth joined Cannon School in summer of 2017. Previously, she served as the Assistant Director of College Counseling at Whitfield School in St. Louis, Missouri from 2014-2017. Prior to her work at Whitfield, Beth has directed a non-profit supporting critically-injured veterans, advised graduate students at Washington University in St. Louis, and worked in the admission offices of the law schools at the University of Michigan and Washington University.

Beth earned her B.A. in International Relations from Stanford University and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Political Science from Washington University.
