50th Anniversary

Time Capsule Reveal

A Day of Thankfulness - 1994 Meets 2019

As we prepared for Thanksgiving break on November 26, 2019, we were especially thankful for the parents, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends who have made Cabarrus Academy and Cannon School the incredible community we are today.
We hope you enjoy the photo and video essay below about that day's time capsule reveal, where we received gifts from our friends from 1994, our 25th anniversary year, and shared gifts for our friends in 2044, our 75th anniversary year.
On November 26, 2019, Head of School Christopher Jones, on behalf of Cannon School’s faculty, staff, and 991 students, opened a time capsule that has been cemented behind a stone at the entrance of the Richard H. Snyder building for 25 years—almost to the day.
As it turns out, our school community was also feeling thankful on November 23, 1994. Our fifth Head of School, Richard Snyder, along with Cabarrus Academy’s faculty, staff, and 277 students created the time capsule to commemorate a momentous 25th anniversary year.
In 1994, Cabarrus Academy had outgrown its beloved, original home—the J.W. Cannon House at 65 Union Street in downtown Concord—and moved here to Poplar Tent Road.
At that time, our new campus was known as Cabarrus Academy at Craig Acres because Alice Craig Edsall and Ralph Edsall donated 30 acres of flood plain from her family’s farm to the school. Cabarrus Academy bought another 35 acres that could be built upon—becoming the beautiful 65-acre campus we know today.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on August 25, 1994, and by November, the time capsule was carefully placed for safe keeping. Our friends from 1994 left us some incredible gifts including:
And today, continuing the tradition, here are the gifts that we will carefully place behind that same stone for our friends to discover during Cannon’s 75th anniversary in 2044:
