The Middle School arts program begins in fifth and sixth grade with optional daily classes in chorus, strings or band, as well as weekly visual art classes. In the seventh grade, daily instruction in drama, dance and visual art is added to the fine arts mix. In addition, all Middle School students may choose a weekly exploratory class in strings, jazz, chorus, dance or visual art. Students also have the option of taking private lessons in piano, voice, woodwinds, brass, percussion, strings, theater and dance.
Fine arts are considered an integral part of a Cannon School education. Upper School students are required to take one year-long arts course to fulfill graduation requirements. However, students are encouraged to take as many fine arts electives as ability, interest and academic load will allow.
Upper School students have a wide selection of courses from which to choose, including wind ensemble, jazz ensemble, chorus, music theory, theater production, advanced acting, directing, playwriting and six offerings in visual art. Plus, students have the opportunity to take private lessons in dance, strings, piano, woodwinds, brass and flute.
