Athletic teams have won state championships each year between 2001 and 2009. Cannon won the Wachovia Championship for the area’s most successful program three consecutive years.

Published by DavidsonNews.net, July 22, 2010 A new Cannon School tradition will begin Aug. 14 when the school’s first varsity football team takes on Hickory Grove. The Cougars will play their inaugural game at the Hickory Grove Jamboree, beginning at 7 p.m.
“The members of this first team are embarking on a unique journey and will make history every single day on the practice and game fields,” said Head Coach Donnie Hayes, who joined Cannon School in 2008 to lead the development of the school’s first football program.
Cannon School is now fielding a varsity football team comprised of students in grades 9-12, the final step in a three-year plan to build a program that includes middle school and varsity teams.
Until now, the squad has been a middle-school team competing against 7th-8th grade and 8th-9th grade opponents.
In preparation for the football program, Cannon has enhanced one of the school’s fields, adding new goal posts, an electronic scoreboard and bleachers. Cannon will host football games under stadium lights to be built prior to the season’s first home game, which is scheduled for Aug. 27 at 7 p.m.
Hayes, who has more than 12 years of middle and high school coaching experience and experience as a college and semi-professionalfootball player, joined Cannon from Viera High School in Viera, Fla., where he oversaw the implementation of their football program and served as head coach for two seasons.
Cannon School is an independent junior kindergarten through 12th grade college preparatory institution. It is the Charlotte area’s fourth-largest independent school and attracts students from Davidson, Concord, Cornelius, Huntersville, Mooresville, the University City area, Kannapolis, and Salisbury. |
