CONCORD, N.C. – A new Cannon School tradition will begin on Saturday, August 14 when the school’s first varsity football team takes on Hickory Grove. The Cougars will play its inaugural game at the Hickory Grove Jamboree, beginning at 7 p.m.
“The members of this first team are embarking on a unique journey and will make history every single day on the practice and game fields,” said head coach Donnie Hayes.
Cannon School is fielding a varsity football team comprised of students in grades 9-12, the final step in a three year plan to build a program that includes middle school and varsity teams. The school decided to add football to its flourishing athletics program after several years of research and conversations both within its school community and with schools offering established and relatively new football programs.
In preparation for the football program, Cannon has enhanced one of the school’s fields, adding new goal posts, an electronic scoreboard and bleachers. Beginning this season, Cannon will host football games under stadium lights to be built prior to the season’s first home game, which will take place Friday, August 20, at 7 p.m., against North Raleigh Christian Academy.
Coach Hayes joined Cannon School in 2008 to lead the development of the school’s first football program, a middle school-level team that competes against 7th-8th grade and 8th-9th grade opponents. He joined Cannon from Viera High School in Viera, Fla., where he oversaw the implementation of their football program and served as head coach for two seasons. Hayes has more than 12 years of coaching experience at the high school and middle school levels, as well as experience as a college and semi-professional football player.
Cannon School is an independent Junior Kindergarten through Grade 12 college preparatory institution. It is the Charlotte area’s fourth-largest independent school and attracts students from Concord, Davidson, Cornelius, Huntersville, Mooresville, the University City area, Kannapolis, and Salisbury. Cannon School instills academic excellence and personal responsibility, inspires athletic and artistic accomplishment, and promotes a respect for diversity within a challenging and safe educational environment.
