Athletics Overview

Cannon School’s athletic programs foster an environment for students to develop a number of skills outside of the classroom. With more than 30 sports teams, our programs promote a positive self-image, an understanding of teamwork and the development of physical, mental and social skills that last a lifetime.

Athletic teams have won state championships each year between 2001 and 2009. Cannon won the Wachovia Championship for the area’s most successful program three consecutive years.

Cannon School is a member of the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association (NCISAA) and a member of the Charlotte Independent Schools Athletic Association (CISAA). Other area public and private schools are also on our schedules, which provide our teams with strong competition.

CONCORD, N.C. – Following an extensive search, Cannon School has hired Ashley Yocum to be director of volleyball and head varsity coach. Yocum, a Malone College (Canton, Ohio) graduate who was team captain of the school’s volleyball team, comes to Cannon after coaching at Carolina Courts, a volleyball training facility in Indian Trail, N.C. Before working at Carolina Courts, Yocum was assistant coach at Wright State University, a Division I school in Dayton, Ohio, and head coach at Kaepa Buckeye Volleyball Club in Columbus, Ohio, where she coached multiple Junior Olympic teams.

“We are very excited to have Ashley Yocum directing our volleyball program at Cannon,” says Cannon School Athletic Director Doug Maynard. “Ashley’s background as a player, coach and instructor will be instrumental in continuing to develop an extensive and successful program for our student-athletes.”

Cannon School’s varsity volleyball team, which competes in the Charlotte Independent Schools Athletic Association (CISAA), qualified for the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association (NCISAA) state championship tournament each of the last two years.
